Black and White to Color

Still life green pepper and orange

In this class, students will make a drawing in pencil from a painted master work and transfer it to a prepared canvas. They will make a open and closed grisaille using titanium white and raw umber oil paint. After an introduction to color theory and exercises on color mixing, the student will begin the final stage of the assignment by making an over painting to cover the underpainting, using a limited color palette. This is a common traditional method of oil painting which many of the masters used. We will make sure to pay attention to proportions, creating the illusion of volume and space in pencil and paint. The fundamentals of light and color will be observed.
