Our full-time Atelier Program offers classical academic fine art training in drawing and painting. Our curricular study can take 3 years to complete, depending on the progress of the student. We guide our students step by step through each assignment to assure mastery at each level (apprenticeship, journeymen, professional). Interested candidates must be serious about art and dedicated to arduous daily study.
Our typical student candidates are interested in realist fine art, medical illustration, realist illustration, figurative art, portraiture and sculpture. Apprentice: Levels I, II, III Level I: Drawing fundamentals, Bargue drawings (line and tone), Master copy drawings, Level II: Geo-form drawings, Plaster cast drawing, Level III: Figure drawing from the live model, Painting fundamentals - value theory and plaster cast painting. Composition, perspective and human anatomy for artists will also be covered.
Journeymen: Level IV Level IV: Color theory, Painting master copies, Figure painting from the live model, Portrait painting from the live model, Still life and Landscape painting.
Professional Artist: Level V Level V: Emancipation work - creating a work that reflects the area or genre of art the student artist intends to pursue as a professional.
Atelier Program Associated Tuition: 9 months of study - Full-time study/ Monday - Friday/ 9 am to 4 pm/ $8,100 annually. - Half-time study/ Monday - Friday, 9 am to noon (group 1) and 1 pm to 4 pm (group 2)/ $5,400 annually.
Federal Holidays:The office is closed on days listed with asterisks, however students can study in the studio. * Indigenous Peoples Day 10/13/2025 * Veterans’ Day 11/11/2025 - Thanksgiving Recess, 11/24 – 30/2025 - Winter Recess, 12/22/2025 – 1/11/2026 - Classes will resume on 1/12/2026 * Martin Luther King Jr. Day 1/19/2026 - Last day of Fall semester, 1/30/2026 - Spring Recess, Monday – Sunday, 3/30 – 4/5/2026
Interview: Students planning to attend the atelier program should schedule a visit for an interview and tour. This is a required part of the admissions process. If you are physically unable to attend an interview, please contact Cooley Studios to make alternate arrangements.
