Cast Drawing:

Michael A. Cooley, Female hand, 2014, Graphite. © M Cooley

This class will introduce the student to statuary antique cast drawing in graphite on white paper. Cast drawing is a standard in classical academic drawing. It helps the student to correctly observe light and shadow. They emperically wittnesses the phenomina of light as it strikes the subject and moves across the form. This phenomina observed and faithfully depicted in a drawing creates a convencing sense of three dimensional form and space on a two dimensional surface. Applying the block-in drawing method, the student creates an accurate linear drawing of the cast. Next they will draw in the shadow shapes separating light from dark, mass in flat shadow tone and progress to modelling the form.
