Block-in drawing, (limited to 8 students)
     – June 3, 10, 17, 24
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 4 days/ $500
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This class will introduce students to a most effective systematic method of breaking down a drawing assignment to its simplest form and creating a clean very accurate depiction. Using the block-in method, one makes careful observations of their subject. The student begins drawing a series of a few straight lines based on the angles, tilts and points he/she observed while viewing the subject. This is akin to constructing a scaffolding for a  house or building one intends to build. The student continues making adjustments to the construct until he/she develops an accurate contour drawing. The student will then begin to work no the inside of the drawing with the same meticulous placing of lines until he/she has developed a clean accurate drawing.

Drawing fundamental, (limited to 8 students)
     – June 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 5 days/ $600
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This class will introduce students to basic drawing fundamentals from a classical approach. They will be introduced to the essential drawing materials, how to hold, use them. There will be an initial drawing test to asses what level of skill the student possesses. Students will then be given exercises to train their eye to see with greater accuracy, their hands to become more nimble and their mind to focus. These exercises include faithfully copying lines, 2D organic linear shape drawing, 2D and 3D linear geometric form drawing. They will also learn about light, value, form, measurement and proportion. Having learned the set of drawing skills taught in the class, the student will feel more confident when tackling more complex assignments.

Cast drawing, (limited to 6 students)
     – June 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 5 days/ $600
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This class will introduce the student to statuary antique cast drawing in graphite pencil on white paper. Cast drawing is a standard in classical academic drawing. It helps the student to correctly observe light and shadow. They directly observe the phenomena of light as it strikes the subject and moves across the form. Faithfully depicting this phenomena in a drawing creates a convincing sense of three dimensional form and space on a two dimensional surface. Applying the block-in drawing method, the student creates an accurate linear drawing of the cast. Next they will draw in the shadow shapes separating light from dark, mass in flat shadow tone and progress to modelling the form.

Grisaille painting, (limited to 8 students)
     – June 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 5 days/ $600
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This class will introduce students to the basic fundamental principles of oil painting. Students will become familiar with the medium of oil, paint, canvases and paint brushes. They will also learn how to use and care for their utensils. Work in value (white, black and raw umber), they will create a value chart, paint geometric forms and grisaille paintings. A grisaille painting is what is commonly called an underpainting. The principles of light, value, form, proportion, perspective and composition will be observed.

Portrait drawing, (limited to 6 students)
     – June 26, 27, 28, 29, 30
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 5 days/ $600
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This course will introduce the student to basic concepts of portrait drawing. Using the block-in approach, the student will be learn to construct an accurate linear representation of the live model. Once the linear drawing is complete, the student will move on to massing in tone and eventually to rendering form and detail. The student will learn to create a good likeness and the spirit or personality of the sitter.

Color theory, (limited to 8 students)
     – July 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 10 days/ $1,200
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

This class will introduce students to the concept and practices for understanding color. They will learn the 3 elements of color (value, hue and chroma), how they work together, how to mix and use strategy to get the visual impact you desire. The student will make color charts, match colors to objects, devise color strategies and finally create a specific painting assigned by the instructor.

Color Glazing – grisaille to brilliant color, (limited to 8 students)
     – July (dates and times to be announced)
     – Instructor: Edi Wadkins
     – Registration (tba)

Grisaille to color, (limited to 8 students)
     – July 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 31 August 1, 2, 3, 4
     – 9am – 4pm
     – 10 days/ $1,200
     – Instructor: Michael Cooley
     – Registration open

In this class, students will make a drawing in pencil from a painted master work and transfer it to a prepared canvas. They will make a open and closed grisaille using titanium white and raw umber oil paint. After an introduction to color theory and exercises on color mixing, the student will begin the final stage of the assignment by making an over painting to cover the underpainting, using a limited color palette. This is a common traditional method of oil painting which many of the masters used. We will make sure to pay attention to proportions, creating the illusion of volume and space in pencil and paint. The fundamentals of light and color will be observed.

Classical portrait painting, (limited to 6 students)

This course will introduce students to the time honored techniques and approach to classical portrait painting. The student will learn how to approach a painting in a clear logical manner, efficient strategies for mixing color to achieve stunning flesh tones and how to thoughtfully execute the step by steps process of building a painting. Steps to building a painting includes making an accurate drawing, underpainting, blocking-in color, scumbling, fine tuning and progressing to completion. Each phase will be demonstrated and explained thoroughly by the instructor. Students will then follow the steps demonstrated by the instructor. Each student will receive personalized critic at his/her easel. Light, form, value, color, atmosphere, accurate drawing and painting will be observed.
